Hello all. As a professional working in the Corporate world of Audio/ Visual. I am constantly experiencing poor habits by other professionals who speak at their companies seminars or meetings.
I decided to create a blog to give the common mistakes I see and offer solutions so when you get on stage next time to speak in-front of a small to large size audience you’ll be better prepared.

#1: Greetings; When new to a property make sure you get the cards of the technicians that are in your room prepping for the event. Pleasant attitude wins every time. Remember these techs have been working threw the night to produce a flawless event for you and you’re company so be pleasant not a screwed.

#2: Rehearsals; You CANNOT walk in two minutes before you go on, hand the engineer you power point and expect to have total confidence in your speech. There’s rehearsal for a reason. Iron out any problems, get the flow and speed of speech and link anything that might not be on the flashdrive.

#3 Power Points: Video; The common mistake I see is when the PPT is created using video often the video is not linked to the page on your power point. In most cases you linked the video which is sitting on your desktop computer or not embedded on your flashdrice. A great habit to learn which will make your technician very happy is to always create & save off a general folder of your project. Copy the whole folder to your flashdrive and use/ revise the contents in folder (PPT, Video, Audio, Picture, etc..).

#4 Mics: Microphones is a major factor in how you are perceived on stage. The most common are Shure wireless Lavaliers. The microphone condenser gets real used and most hotels or production companies don’t ever replace the capsule and that can lead to a lot of problems. make sure that if you have to go wireless that the capsules have been serviced. I love the “Countryman” mic. It’s real solid and virtually invisible. You will always be heard with no drop out the close to the source. You’re mouth.

#5 Lavalier Placement: The most common mistake I see is when the technician puts the lavilier in the best position for no feedback or best clarity and you go moving it around. Most of the time you clip it to your stomach. What is that? The worse thing you could ever do is be further from the mic. The technican has to turn the volume & gain up causing more chance to feedback. In our world feedback is a show no no. We go thru dramatic steps to ensure success and doing moves like that produces failure. Step into the podium mic and leave the lavalier where your technician places it.

For corporate public communication consultation please send me an email and I would be happy to create and coach you to success.

QUICK LESSON: Chroma screen production.
A quick lesson on how a chroma screen production works. Below is a picture of the set that was used in the commercial.

We start with the basics. First, you need a blue or green chrome screen with frame. Any creases or shadows in your muslin will create problems once you get the footage loaded into a edit software. Making sure that all wrinkles are steamed out. Do Not Use a squirt bottle. getting the fabric wet will take too long to dry and the chloride in the water will stain the fabric. Steam doesn’t leave a residue and drys quicker. You don’t want ant mistakes when your client is in the room.

Next, a well lite chroma screen is key. No pun intended. You will need two separate lighting diagram. lighting on chroma screen and three point lighting on your subject. Remember no shadows. This is why you pay a professional. It take a keen eye to set this phase of production.
Make sure the tone of the chroma screen isn’t too washed out and you ready to go. Chroma screens is one of our specialty’s at Cutterhabit productions. We specialize in Motion graphics, live and studio chroma screen productions.
